Small-sized granular material used in concrete or mortar mixes, generally in the form of natural sand or sand from stone crushing, with a grain size passing a sieve of ±4.75 mm. Fine aggregates function to: fill the voids between coarse aggregates, increase the density and consistency of the mixture, help the bonding process with cement.
Makadam
A pavement layer composed of relatively uniform-sized crushed stone that is gradually compacted, with or without a binder, to form a strong and stable layer as a road foundation. Generally, macadam is used as: lower or upper foundation layers of the road, pavement base before asphalt or concrete layers.
Base Course
The top foundation layer in a pavement structure that lies between the subbase course and the surface layer (asphalt or concrete), functions to distribute traffic loads to the layers below so that the pavement remains stable and strong. Base course is generally made of: Class A aggregates of 0-30 mm size (combination of fine and coarse quality aggregates) or compacted well-graded materials.
